Pattern Mind Immersion with Joel Glanzberg & Dr. Tamsin Woolley-Barker

  • Borrego Institute for Living Design (map)

Living systems can only be understood as flows of exchange, which we perceive as patterns. Because they result from the special shared conditions and history of Earth, such patterns are consistent across diverse scales and contexts. The patterns in our bodies and organizations are similar to those of other organisms, watersheds, or ecosystems.

We are biological beings, and nothing makes sense except in light of evolution. Yet decision-makers are largely living systems illiterate, and organizational structures and processes don't support our natural potential to adapt, persist, and regenerate evolutionary potential as a result.

Perceiving and understanding such patterns takes practice, but a Pattern Mind sees behind surface things to the processes and patterns that shaped them. How do adaptation, agility, resilience, innovation, and thriving really occur?

Pattern Mind enables us to think and work with living flows, work effectively in novel situations, and “surf for free” on matter and energy already in motion. What would have to be true for your vision to flow into place like water downhill? What's stopping you?

Joel’s well-known Pattern Mind courses integrate Tracking (the original science), Living Systems Thinking Technologies), and Permaculture Design (working with living flows to meet human needs with least effort and disruption while growing system coherence and health). Dr. Tamsin brings her perspective and expertise as an evolutionary biologist, bioanthropologist, and artist to help participants see and think about living patterns.

Students with diverse perspectives, expertise, and learning styles will experience body movement, outdoor applied learning, classroom time, and small working/thinking groups that grow their capacity to:

• perceive and understand principles and patterns of living systems

• track their specific nature, context, role, and potential

• identify habits and patterns that strategically influence larger systems

• surf for free on existing flows of energy and matter

• grow potential and context with intention

Please join us in the incredible Anza-Borrego Desert and discover how evolutionary thinking can help us rehumanize the way we live and work, revitalize our communities and organizations, and regenerate evolutionary potential in the ecosystems we live and work within.

About Joel Glanzberg:

Joel contributes over 25 years’ experience as an applied naturalist to land and community development projects throughout the United States. Through assessing, understanding, and communicating the inherent patterns present in natural systems, Joel helps clients identify principles and guidelines for appropriate and healthy development.

An active author and educator in the fields of permaculture and ecological design, Joel is skilled in cross-cultural communication and teaching. He has taught throughout the United States as well as in Africa and South America, and worked with a variety of Native American tribes and communities. He also acts as a faculty member for The Regenerative Practitioner series. His research has focused on the application of traditional land-use practices to the design of modern infrastructure.

Joel has worked for a diverse client base, including communities, colleges and universities, government agencies, and private developers. Recent projects include a new student campus for the Winston Preparatory School in Norwalk, Connecticut and a regional sustainability planning project in the Finger Lakes region of New York.
